The Concordia Institute for Canadian Jewish Studies

The Concordia Institute for Canadian Jewish Studies is dedicated to the study of the Canadian Jewish experience. Through research and education, the Concordia Institute for Canadian Jewish Studies supports a wide range of projects of local, national, and international interest, which contribute to this growing field of inquiry. The Concordia Institute for Canadian Jewish Studies provides a bridge between the academic study of Canadian Jewry and the community in which it serves. The Chair, responsible for the academic study of Canadian Jewry, and the Institute, responsible for community activities, represent an unprecedented partnership.

Supporting and recognizing Canadian Jewish Studies in the community.
The Institute, along with the J.I. Segal Cultural Foundation, funds the Prize in Canadian Jewish Studies.  This year’s prize recipients were Esther Trépanier for Jewish Painters of Montreal: Witnesses of their Time 1930-1948, and Allan Levine for Coming of Age: A History of the Jewish People in Montreal. For more details please see: http://www.jewishpubliclibrary.org/en/events+programs++courses/ji+segal+literary+awards/

Providing academic courses for undergraduate and graduate students.
In addition, the Chair is committed to providing resources, learning and other culturally enriching experiences within the Jewish community and its institutions.

Undertaking scholarly research in all areas of Canadian Jewish studies.
The Chair also engages in projects established in conjunction with the community’s organizations, in an effort to support the development of policy and programs.

Offering public lectures and seminars both at Concordia University and off-campus venues.
The Chair gratefully acknowledges the support of Heritage Canada / Multiculturalism Canada, Canada / Israel Committee and Concordia University in the initial funding of the Chair.

Publication Programs
The Institute for Canadian Jewish Studies has a range of publication programs, for which we have an open call for submission. These include our series in Canadian Jewish Studies, co-published with Red Deer Press, for which we are interested in fiction, non-fiction, popular history and memoir by Jewish writers. Edited volumes are also of interest. We publish two chapbook series under the rubric of Hungry I Books, which focus on creative and historical writing. In the former case, we consider short fiction or non-fictional texts; in the latter case, we aim to bring to light documents or scholarly work in the area of Canadian Jewish history. Please see the publications section on this site to gain a sense of our past work. We prefer submissions via query letter, and in paper manuscript form rather than in any kind of electronic form.
